Delicious Drizzly Days

Do you ever have one of those perfect rainy days? You know, the ones that people are always referring to – the ‘let’s save it for a rainy day’ ones? Well, yesterday was a literal rainy day, so I decided to make the most of it. Now you might be thinking that most days for the next three months are going to be literal rainy days, but this was the perfect storm {no pun intended} of a day – with nothing on the docket of things to do, I had the gray, drizzly rain factor going for me, I had the soft lighting filling the living room, I had a couple of cozy couches and bundle-y blankets, the perfect pal, and an array of fantastic old flicks. To top it all off, I had homemade soup and warm, spiced apple cider cooking on the stove-top. A perfect rainy day.

I just thought I would share this with you because I can’t tell you the cathartic, relaxing aura that a day like this created in my world, and I thought perhaps you needed a little bit of therapeutic movie-watching, soup-eating, blanket-snuggling goodness in your world too. Can’t recommend it highly enough. {Insert deep breath here.}

Below is the list of movies that kept me busy yesterday – please hold the judgment. I am aware the five, YES FIVE, movies is a large number to go through in a day, but I do promise that I got up off the couch at least two times yesterday (once to go to the store to get soup-making ingredients, and once to make soup), so that’s something, right? But I am starving for an “old classics” education, and if a girl has to make sacrifices once in a while, so be it. {And by sacrifices, I mean that I would be happy to watch movie after movie for days on end, but I’m trying to uphold my ‘über-productive image’ so just roll with me here.}

Oldies But Goodies List {Part 1}
1. An Affair to Remember (1957) – a fantastic love story featuring the ever-so-dreamy Cary Grant and the lovely Deborah Kerr. They start on the sea and finish in New York City – the romance was oozing and the chemistry was palpable. Call me a sap, but this one was probably my favorite of the day.  

2. Some Like It Hot (1959) – Yowza Marilyn! This light-hearted flick had me laughing and smiling for two straight hours. And in black and white? Now that’s something! {Do I sort of sound like I’m right out of the fifties?} This one stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis (also very dreamy, and Jamie Lee’s papa – who knew!?), and Jack Lemmon (not quite so dreamy, but thoroughly entertaining).

3. Come September (1961) – another comical story, set in beautiful Cinque Terre, Italy. And hello Rock Hudson! I mean really, where are all these dreamy guys now-a-days? We get George Clooney and that’s it? Womp womp. But I digress. This flick also features the gorgeous Gina Lollobrigida, who dazzles with her wild (Italian) woman ways, and Sandra Dee too, such a doll.

 {Break for soup here. Between movie number 3 and 4, we made Winter Squash Soup with Gruyere Croutons – mmm. The recipe was courtesy of Smitten Kitchen and was simply delish. Hint: buy pre-cut squash or your arms will be sore the next day… Thought: this fab foodie blog is parfait. Can’t wait to reference it again. ‘Nuff said.}

4. To Catch a Thief (1955) – directed by Alfred Hitchcock, you know it’s gonna be good. And Cary Grant is back, so you can’t beat that. But throw Grace Kelly in the mix, and this girl’s a goner. With crime, mystery, and romance (between two utterly gorgeous people, I might add), another rave review.

5. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) – Marilyn charmed and Jane Russell dazzled. In fact, Jane may be one of my new favorite beautiful people. Now I haven’t finished this one fully yet (past my bedtime…), but I did walk away with a very valuable lesson: diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

This is what I have taken away from the movie watching: Cary Grant is beyond divine, breaking out in song should be used in contemporary films and television shows more often than just on Glee, and I can’t wait for the next ‘rainy day.’
